Active reading was a very important aspect of this class, and I improved greatly as the term went on. If I read a text and I did not actively read or understand fully the meaning of the text, it was very hard to continue with future assignments. Active reading for me included reading and even listening to the articles we were assigned. As I read I highlighted important text as well as annotated in the margins about major points, questions and opinions I found in the reading. I would also ‘decode’ some of the reading if it was a little unclear at first what the author meant. In 3/24 homework, I attached many pictures of my annotated Coates text. This text was not only long but very involved. I made sure to spend a lot of time writing in the margins and truly understanding the meaning of the text. I listened to the audio version as I read along as well. In 2/22 homework, I had annotated Jeffery Scheuer’s article about Liberal Arts. This one was another one I needed to pay close attention to because I was not familiar in the ideas surrounding liberal arts. This article was not as involved as the Coates article, but it had a lot of information I had to take note of. In homework UNE Student Handbook Reflection, I demonstrated great critical reading skills to be able to discuss the text and connect what UNE deems important for their students to know.
