- Dweck speaks about the research she has done on the thought processes of young children. Fixed and growth mindset students both exist, but ones with a growth mindset have a huge advantage over school work, and mental toughness.
- Lukianoff and Haidt discuss the catastrophic affects of protecting college students from being offended by words and ideas of other. They speak upon the educational aspects, mental health affects, and the professional life these students are likely to have later in life.
- Lukianoff and Haidt discuss the importance of critical thinking, and when one has a fixed mindset, they are incapable to thinking critically. hough these two authors have different age groups of interest, Dwecks ideas of fixed and growth mindsets develop into the types of students Lukianoff and Haidt study.
- Lukianoff and Haidt discuss the idea of critical thinking and the importance of cognitive behavior therapy. “Why not teach incoming students how to practice cognitive behavioral therapy? Given high and rising rates of mental illness, this simple step would be among the most humane and supportive things a university could do” (Lukinoff/Haidt para. 63). This situation and problems universities are having could be decreased dramatically through a simple course about cognitive behavior skills. Not only would this solve major problems for the university, but also would help students for the rest of their lives. These skills are used not only in academic circumstances, but within sports, professional careers, personal matters and mental wellbeing. In contrast, Dweck discusses the differences between a fixed and growth mindset. Dweck has done extensive research on the affects of children when taught skills to build a growth mindset. “In our country, there are groups of students who chronically underperform…they’ve done so poorly for so long that many people think it’s inevitable. But when educators create growth mindset classrooms steeped in yet, equality happens” (Dweck para. 11). A slight shift in the way teachers orient their classrooms could create equality. This equality would change the country, easily. Both these authors believe that skills are taught. Some are taught to have a growth mindset and different cognitive behavior therapy strategies, where others are taught a fixed mindset, and to avoid hard problems. The research these authors have done are astronomically important for our country, and the shift it needs NOW.
